Assessment of Virtual Water of Irrigated Agriculture, Imports, Exports and Water Footprint for Sri Lanka

Irrigated agriculture is the highest water user in Sri Lanka. Therefore, when there an increasing demand of other sectors such as drinking, industries, environment etc., it required to reallocate from irrigated sector meet this increased demand. However, needs be done while ensuring food security nation using virtual concept, which defined embedded a product. study conducted with objective assessing the, i) agricultural production, ii)virtual imports and exports, iii) virtualwater trade iv) footprint nation. The dataon crop requirements, extent cultivated, imported,and exported products were collected fromsecondary sources analysis was made accordingto globally accepted methodology. annual value domestic production found 8.13Gm3 paddy contributes 54.7%. averagevirtual Maha season less thanthat Yala whilst ofpaddy minor schemes are higher than that majorschemes both seasons implying more isrequired produce 1kg schemes. Thenet import Virtual 3.8 Gm3 per year. waterfootprint Lanka 12.0 year percapita 535.22 m3 waterrequired for about 15.8% thesurface runoff country indicating possibility ofmeeting available waterresources.
